CHARLES II (1630-1685)
A warrant on paper for payment from the Privy Purse to Sir Robert Howard Bart., the sum of six hundred and twenty pounds, signed 'Charles R' at the head, dated 16 June 1673, folio, countersigned by Thomas, Lord Clifford, framed and glazed (spotting).

Lot Essay

Thomas, Lord Clifford was Lord High Treasurer and one of Charles II's five principal ministers. He resigned in protest following the Test Act of 1673 whereby the holder of any civil or military office was obliged to take the Church of England sacrament and renounce Catholic doctrine. This may well be one of the last documents he signed before his resignation in June that year.
