One-page letter, in Devanagri script, text in ink, signed in pencil, from Ashram Sabarmati, 'Wednesday' [early March 1926], 8°, to Bhai Shankarprasad, reporting that he has completed a course of injections and is now in good health, that the doctors have advised him to go to a hill station, and concluding with an enquiry whether 'the children...are spinning the wheel as per their vow', with recipient's annotation on verso, with an English translation of the text.

Lot Essay

The spinning wheel in question refers to the mass movement started by Gandhi to spin cotton in Indian households; the object was to put an end to the use of imported textiles from Britain, encourage Indian industry and reduce unemployment.
