Tregonwell Frampton, born in 1641 at Moreton in Derbyshire, was the fifth son of William Frampton and his wife Katharine Tregonwell. From an early age his love of fields sports and racing was evident and by the 1670s his many gambling exploits and arranging of matches between famous horses were legendary. In about 1695 he was made Keeper of the King's Running Horses for King William III, and he later managed the racing interests of Queen Anne, King George I and George, Prince of Wales, later King George II. Known as the 'Father of the Turf', he died on 12 March 1727 and was buried at All Saints, Newmarket.
