1959 GOGGOMOBIL TL-400 TRANSPORTER
Chassis No. tba
Yellow with black interior
Engine: Glas twin cylinder, 2-stroke, 392cc; Gearbox: pre-select four speed manual and reverse; Suspension: swing axle and coil springs; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic. Left hand drive.
Glas, the producers of the famous Goggomobil, were perhaps the most successful microcar builders in terms of production numbers and they built 250,000 cars in all which were sold all over Europe. They were adventurous and diverse in their design and created a wonderful variety of coachwork styles. The TL-400 Transporter was one such example that charmed its way into European society after originally having been built for the German Post Office.
The Transporter is now the most coveted microcar for 'Goggi' collectors and enthusiasts and the van we have pleasure in offering today has a particular appeal. One of only four that resided in America, it is of US specification and an original left hand drive model, with a 400cc power unit compared to the normal 250cc. Mounted on a standard platform Glas chassis, the engine produces 20hp, taking the van easily to 56mph and we are told 'the van can cruise at that speed all day'. Transmission is through a pre-select four-speed gearbox.
The van was discovered by Mr. Weiner in Tennessee, having been used as a fish wagon for a number of years. It was subsequently described as one of the toughest restorations in the collection, with a complete ground-up project undertaken. This included making up a new floorpan, each pressing done by hand, and then welding the sides and ancilliary parts together as necessary - a labour intensive project that is reflected now in the quality of the rebuild. Fortunately the priceless windscreen was replaced when the Goggomobil Club made a batch of new ones. The paint finish is outstanding - some $12,000 was spent on the paintwork alone!
Finished in bright yellow, the original colour, this wonderful and highly desirable little van will enchant both driver and onlooker alike.
