1957 BMW ISETTA 300 (SLIDING WINDOW)
Chassis No. 503092
Red with brown interior.
Engine: BMW single cylinder, 297cc ; Gearbox: four speed and reverse; Brakes: hydraulic front and rear; Suspension: front, swing arms, rear, leaf springs. Left hand drive.
BMW's Isetta is probably the most popular and recognisable of all Bubble cars; built between 1955-1962, the concept was based on the company's attempt to adjust to a changing car market in post-war Europe. The simplistic design was taken from an idea that originated with the Iso company in Milan, Italy.
Power was from a 247cc BMW motor cycle engine, positioned at the rear and the entire drivetrain was then packed in ahead of and between the narrowly spaced rear wheels. From October 1956 a second body became available and now featured a 297cc engine. This is one such example of the Isetta 300, found in a hoard of microcars in Florida by Mr Weiner and subsequently fully restored. This restoration has been both meticulous and exacting. Taken off the frame, the body was stripped and repainted in a factory colour of light red and the painting alone came to $6500! The Isetta's interior has been left original to the car, a deliberate decision to just tidy and detail but not replace. At the same time the engine, transmission and running gear was all rebuilt as necessary.
The Isetta comes with a full complement of period accessories, rarely seen now, including parcel rack, sunvisors, ashtray, grab handle, air vents, mudflaps and high front impact bars.
A rare, charming example in exemplary condition.
