Lot Essay

The present lot was originally part of a larger painting entitled Maskerade, Jaffé no. 135, (140 x 100 cm). After the exhibition at Boymans-van Beuningen in 1939, Willink decided to cut it up into two portraits. The other portrait, in a Dutch private collection, is entitled Vrouwenkop, Jaffé no. 135B.
