Lotus demonstrated a completely new line of cars in 1976 with the introduction of the Elite, Eclat and Esprit models. They were completely different to the older Elan and Europa models, although they still kept the Lotus philosophies of lightweight construction and sporting engines. The Elite was identified by its square tail and was the base model. Halogen headlights were a further improvement, followed by power steering and finally, a first for the company, automatic transmission. An all new alloy twin cam four cylinder motor provided the power. Although the Hethel based company had always exported their cars to North America, the late seventies and early eighties cars were not prolific in the U.S., thereby making this example quite a rare car.
This is an Elite 503 and therefore it has Halogen lamps and power steering. The car has standard blue paintwork and cream leather seats with two tone brown interior. The paint shows some spidering and blistering in various areas, while the interior is in presentable original condition. At this point we are not sure of the mechanical condition of the Lotus, so please check with the auctioneers before the sale. Mechanically complex, these cars do require maintenance, particularly to the toothed cam belts, and we recommend a full service before regular use. The indicated mileage is only 48,331 which is quite likely to be correct, so the Lotus should provide many more years of happy motoring.
