Lot Essay

This study of a peasant's head relates to a series of portraits of paysans, all wearing the same distinctive hat and short coat, which Millet drew in the late 1850s, in preparation for his epic homages to rural France.

Dr Alexandra Murphy kindly confirmed the authenticity of the present work.
