A SPANISH SILVER-GILT CIBORIUM
Late 16th Century, probably Cuenca, apparently unmarked, except for later French control marks
On circular foot, the border cast, chased and applied with winged cherubs' busts with scrolls and matting between, the centre with further masks with skulls between, the central plinth with scroll brackets and applied flowerheads, the vase-shaped stem rising from fluted knop and cast and chased with masks with fruit festoons between, the upper part with broad baluster cast and chased with matting and lobes, the bowl with masks within scroll cartouches with fruit between, the border to the cover cast, chased and applied with busts of Saints and cherubs with the keys of Saint Peter, the centre with baluster finial with applied scroll brackets, marked on foot with later French control marks
