A GERMAN SILVER-GILT CUP
Maker's mark of Paulus Flindt the Elder, Nuremberg, circa 1565
On spreading foot, the border acid-etched with scrolling foliage moresques, the domed centre repousse and chased with alternate plain and flower and foliage lobes, the vase-shaped stem cast and chased with cherubs' busts and floral festoons above lobed plinth and beneath applied animal mask scroll brackets, the lower part of the bowl similarly chased to the foot, the upper part with three masks in elaborate floral cartouches with strapwork and plain lobes between, the rim acid-etched with further moresques and lozenges of foliage, the underside of the base with medallion engraved with accollé coats-of-arms beneath the initials 'GIPMSO' and above the date 1550, marked on border of foot
