TETIUS, Hieronymous. Aedes Barberinae ad Quirinalem. Rome: Mascardus, 1642.
2° (343 x 237mm). Roman, Greek and italic types. Additional engraved title by Camillo Cungio, full-page presentation portrait of Pope Urban VIII, 12 (of 14) folding engravings by Michael Natalis after Andrea Sacchi, and C. Bloemaert after Salvius Castel-Aretin, and others, 12 full-page engravings, 4 portraits, 9 half-page engravings, including one on final recto, 3 full-page engraved frames with letterpress text, engraved title vignette of the Barberini arms, numerous engraved head- and tailpieces, and initials. (Lacking plates 10 and 11, and possibly A3? (pp.5-6), neat tear at fold of one plate, some small stains, one plate on guard, light marginal stain in final 4 leaves.) Contemporary Roman brown morocco BOUND FOR PRESENTATION to a member of the Barberini family, elaborately gilt with crowned Barberini arms at centre, fan ornament at inner corners of panel, small bees echoing Barberini arms repeated in central border, flat spine similarly tooled with Barberini bees, gilt edges (without 2 fore-edge ties, spine lightly faded, short split at lower joint, corners slightly bumped). Provenance: Barberini family (binding); Thomas Mansel (armorial bookplate upside-down on rear pastedown).
FIRST EDITION, bound for presentation to a member of the Barberini family. The Palazzo Barberini was bought in 1625 by Cardinal Francesco Barberini, who commissioned a series of frescos by Pietro da Cortona and Andrea Sacchi to decorate it (illustrated in this volume). The Aedes Barberinae was intended to 'celebrate the palace and magnificent collections of paintings, sculpture and books with which the Barberini family filled it' (Builders and Humanists, Univ. of St. Thomas, Texas, 1966, p.176). The edition employs an unusual system to indicate where particular plates should be bound: an engraved clock-face is printed on the opposite text leaf with the hand pointing to the appropriate number on the dial. The system apparently proved unsatisfactory and was abandoned half-way through the work. The binding shares an outer border tool with lot 235. Berlin Kat. 2662; Brunet V, 765; Cicognara 3463.
