2 volumes in 4, 4° (270 x 180mm). 24 coloured plates after Aldin, hand-coloured title vignettes and head-pieces, initials and illustrations, all after Aldin, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with about 370 items, including 3 original drawings or watercolours, about 354 mounted plates (after C.E. Brock, Hablot K. Browne, Frank Reynolds, J.R. Clayton and others), maps, news-paper clippings and other ephemeral items, most mounted to size, and some text, mounted to size, from other editions of the same work. Near-contemporary green half morocco gilt, top edge gilt, by Bayntun of Bath (lower outer corners of first volume bumped).
The additional illustrations include an unsigned original pen and ink silhouette portrait of Mr. Pickwick, an original pen, ink and watercolour view of the Golden Cross at Charing Cross by H.C.C., unsigned original watercolour of a brigand and his wife in the moonlight, a set of the 12 hand-coloured 'edition de luxe' plates after Charles Brock, a set of plates by A.B. Frost and a number of chromolithographic character studies after 'Kyd' (i.e. Joseph Clayton Clark). In addition to the extra-illustrations, Aldin's illustrations have all been skilfully hand-coloured, possibly by the compiler. (4)
