Lot Essay

Saftleven travelled up the lower and middle Rhine regions of Germany in 1651, starting in Arnhem and Cleve, in the eastern Netherlands, ending up as far as Bingen. He produced many drawings and etchings from this trip that were to inspire his 'Rhenish' landscapes.
