By the late 1920s the Vauxhall Company was greatly respected for its admired Prince Henry and 30/98 sporting models, which proved to be amongst the greatest throroughbreds of that brilliant era. But despite the success of the model type, the business was not in good financial shape and in 1925 was acquired by General Motors. The sporting-car market was necessarily a limited one and the next Vauxhall that would succeed these fine cars would have to appeal to a much wider clientele both at home and in Empire markets across the world. The 20/60 Vauxhall of 1927 was a large, conventional, touring car powered at first by a 2.8 litre overhead valve straight six installed in a rugged pressed steel chassis. The engine with its overhead valves and massive, seven main-bearing crankshaft, was powerful and long-lasting.

For 1930 there was a change in engine capacity with swept-volume increased to nearly three litres, and a stiffer chassis-frame. The gearbox had four speeds, the centre change working in a central gate. Offered with a variety of bodies, built in the factory and by outside coachbuilders, the keenly priced 20/60 had a respectable performance, with a 70mph maximum and 50mph in third. At last on a Vauxhall, the brakes had stopping power to match; on test, pulling this weighty car to halt in 40ft from 50mph.

This car represents a very scarce example of this fine-quality 5-passenger saloon. Superbly restored throughout, it is a strongly-engineered car with a good performance to match, and is possibly one of only half a dozen survivors. A local car which has been in the collection for over 20 years. It comes with a file of documented bills for the work carried out, together with an original old-style logbook, showing previous ownership history, and with current MoT test, tax and V5 document.
