Chief Gunner David Russell Gordon, M.V.O., was appointed Gunner, R.N. in June 1902 and served aboard the Battleship H.M.S. Agincourt from August 1914 until the end of hostilities, thereby being present at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916. His advancement to Chief Gunner, R.N. took place in June 1917 and he joined H.M.Y. Victoria and Albert in January 1919.
