"Tyke" was born in Cairo of British and South African parents and was seconded for military duty in the Middle East Pigeon Service after the outbreak of hostilities. Thus employed, he displayed great courage and determination in June 1943, when from a point which was approximately 100 miles from the nearest Allied airbase, and in visibility which was never better than two miles, he delivered a message on behalf of an endangered American Aircrew, the latter claiming on their subsequent rescue that the gallant "Tyke" had saved their lives.
