1956 PORSCHE 356A SPEEDSTER 1600 SUPER

Engine: four cylinder, air cooled, Super 1600, twin Solex carburetors, 1,582cc, 70bhp at 5,000rpm; Gearbox: four-speed manual; Suspension: independent front and rear; Brakes: four wheel drums. Left hand drive.
When the Porsche 356A was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the Autumn of 1955, the motoring press responded to it with a positive and strong reaction. An article on the sporty new car, published in Autocar, raved to drive a Porsche is to experience a new form of motoring, so refreshingly different is it from the usual run of vehicles. The reaction was consistent across the board as the little cars gained themselves a loyal crowd of their own. Over the course of the next several years, Porsche altered the body designs only minimally, and rather than implement drastic body changes, they offered a variety of powerplant choices instead. Additionally, minor styling improvements like the one piece windshield and deluxe wheel caps were also adapted and smoothed the car's overall look. The Speedster had Beutler-designed bodywork that was wind-cheating and aerodynamic and featured a short chrome-brass windscreen, spartan interior and a range of engine options. The 1600 Super provided 75bhp and gave rise to the monicker 'Super 75s'.
This is a very early 1956 example, a year when just 850 Speedsters were built. The car has been well restored and has excellent paintwork and panel fit. It has correct gold script Speedster lettering on the flanks, a correct shrouded instrument binnacle and a later Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel. It also has a black half-tonneau cover, hood and tan side curtains. The Speedster was primarily intended for warmer climates and this example presents itself very well.
