Lot Essay

The present watercolour was once part of an important album sold at auction in 1974. The album was entitled 'VIEWS BY SEETA RAM FROM SECUNDRA TO AGRA, vol. IX' and watermarks on some of the sheets suggested a date of circa 1810-15. A similar watercolour of the Taj Mahal in morning light is illustrated on the front cover of Romance of the Taj Mahal, Los Angeles, 1989, from the Paul Walter collection.
See lot 296 for a note on the artist and for more information on the album
