JARDINE, Sir William (1800-1874). [British Salmonidae. Edinburgh: W.H.Lizars, 1839-1841].

2 parts (all published) in one volume, large 2° (695 x 500mm). 12 FINE HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES by Lizars after Jardine, each with accompanying leaf of letterpress text (four of these with engraved vignette tailpieces, one hand-coloured). (Seven plates with very small tears to margins.) Contemporary green morocco-backed cloth, brown leather lettering-piece on upper cover, with author's name stamped in gilt below (spine chipped, extremities lightly scuffed), modern cloth box, upper cover with morocco label lettered in gilt.

RARE, UNCUT FIRST EDITION IN FINE CONDITION. The auction records show only one other copy for sale during the last twenty years (Christie's, 23 Feb. 1977, lot 254, sold for £1300). The plates comprise four of the Salmon (Salmo salar) at various stages of its development; four of the Sea-trout (S. trutta); one of the Ferox (S. ferox); two of the Brown trout (S. fario), and, strangely, one of the Vendace (Coregonius vandesius). Sir William Jardine, perhaps best known for his Naturalist's Library series, was also an ardent angler, and in 1860 was appointed to the Royal Commission on the Salmon Fisheries of England and Wales. Nissen ZBI 2092; B.M.(N.H.) II, p.927.
