A gilded brass equinoctial sundial with compass,
signed and dated on the octagonal dial A. Moretti Roma A.D. MCMXCIV, the finely engraved dial with Roman numerals, compass points and signs of the Zodiac within reserved panels, further engraved with the winds Tramontana, Greco, Levinta, Siricco, Ostro, Garbino, Ponente and Maestro with folding spring pin gnomon, supported on a limb with axis, the underside of the dial engraved with the names and latitudes of thirty continental cities, the four wedge-shaped supporting plates engraved with the continents of Europe and Africa, detail of Europe including Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Corisca and Sardinia, and compass rose superimposed over engraved outline of Scandinavia, the underside of the dial also mounted with a latitude half-circle divided into quadrants and raised on a square-section open work and columned stem, supported by a plinth with four shaped legs engraved with Greek key and other decoration over the plinth base, incorporating a compass with further scroll and diamond decoration, the corners with adjustable screw feet, overall height when set for latitude 60 degrees north -- 175/8in.
