Charles Sprague Pearce was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 13th 1851. It was at the age of 22, when Pearce went to Paris to study under the tutelage of Léon Bonnat that he began to develop into a noteworthy artist. Just three years later, in 1876, Pearce began to exhibit in the Paris Salon. He was elected him a chairman of the Paris juries for the Chicago and St. Louis international expositions, of 1893 and 1904 respectively. Furthermore, he had the privilege of becoming a member of the juries of awards for the Paris Exposition of 1889 and the Antwerp Exposition of 1904. Charles Sprague Pearce spent most of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, with his wife, Louise Catherine Bonjean. His oeuvre included works depicting Orientalist scenes, peasant life, Biblical subjects, and a number of portraits.
