STARR, Pearl.
Famous madame.
PEARL WRITES HOME TO ONE OF HER WORKING GIRLS.
Autograph letter signed ("Pearl"), to "Friend Nell", Warren, Arizona, February 4, 1923, in pencil. 2 pages, octavo, very fine.
"Friend Nell I am enclosing a little clipping and thought maybe it would interest you. This is the same woman who was so hateful to poor Dell. So many things I could say if I could see you but don't guess I ever will. Jennette and I are well and getting along very well. She is just the picture of her father, she always did look like him and more now than ever. I truly hope you and Mr. Cobb are well. So will close. Respectfully Pearl." Pearl was the daughter of Belle Starr and Cole Younger. Belle operated the most notorious bordello in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The Jennette referred to was her third daughter from her marriage to the professional gambler, Dell Andrews. As her girls got to the age where Pearl's reputation could cause them harm, she sold her properties in Fort Smith and moved to Bisbee, Arizona where she operated the Starr Hotel.
Provenance: Ronald J. Atlas collection.
