SUHR, Christoffer (1771-1842) and Cornelius SUHR (1781-1857). Sammlung verschiedener Spanischer National -- Trachten und Uniformen der Division des Marquis de la Romana, 1807 und 1808 in Hamburg in Garnison. [Hamburg: c. 1808].
2° (365 x 228mm). Letterpress title and 18 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Cornelius Suhr after Christian Suhr. (Some thumb-soiling, light creasemark affecting title and first few plates, ownership signature cut away from front free endpaper.) Contemporary German marbled boards, gilt edges (lightly rubbed). Provenance: W.A. (initials on front pastedown); shelf-mark (rear free endpaper).
This unusual suite of plates shows the uniform of Spanish troops garrisoned at Hamburg. The cheroot-loving soldiers are often observed at leisure moments, sometimes in the company of their wives, children and donkeys, making what seems a happy adaptation to their new surroundings and the harsher climate. The Suhrs were natives of Hamburg. Christoffer Suhr, who taught at the royal academy in Berlin, also published Hamburgische Trachten gezeichnet und gestochen, a work portraying the costumes of the city, in 1808.
