Lot Essay

This tapestry probably forms part of a series depicting The Story of Jason. Jason, from Iolcus, led the Argonauts to capture the Golden Fleece from Aërtes, King of Colchis on the Black Sea. Aeertes' daughter, Medea, fell in love with Jason and helped him, partially with magic, to overcome the dangers in finding the Fleece. He took it from a tree beneath which a dragon was coiled and fled to Greece with Medea, to avoid the wrath of her father.

A tapestry probably depicting Esther and King Ahasuerus that was very likely from the same workshop, was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 1 October 1998, lot 213.

A tapestry almost certainly from the same set and with identical borders, depicting Jason and Medea, was sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 12 January 1996, lot 1194.
