Sale room notice
In John Brett's 'Studio Log A', 1879-1886, it is noted that this work was painted in May 1885, from a commission the previous autumn, and was sold for £150 to Lynch White Esq of Leigham House, Streatham, London, SW, and was titled 'Autelier Rock, Sark'.

In Brett's Sketchbook no. 63 (National Maritime Museum) he notes that he was cruising in South Gurnsey from 5 September -7 October 1884 in his yacht Viking which he acquired in 1883.

The Alter Rock, also known as The Altar of the Gulls, is part of a group of rocks known as Les Autelets, on Sark.
