Lot Essay

An inscription on a label attached to the reverse of the frame suggests that the present watercolour was exhibted at the Royal Academy. It has not been possible to find this title in the Royal Academy records.

Killingworth Johnson was greatly admired by fellow watercolourist Myles Birket Foster, R.W.S. (1825-1899) who acquired the work Anxious Mother in 1876. As a landscape and genre painter he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1846 and became a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1876, exhibiting over 176 works.
