The original of this model was discovered in the early 1540s, and was housed in the Vatican by 1545. It was ceded to the French in 1797 under the terms of the Treaty of Tolentino but was removed back to Rome in 1816. It featured in the catalogue of the sculptures of the Musée in Paris, where it was described as "one of the most perfect statues that has come down to us from antiquity"
