Lot Essay

The composition of this relief is related to an earlier drawing by Michaelangelo of 1536-40. Similar attention has been paid to the way in which the figures stretch to lower the body of Christ in addition to the overall tightness of the composition. Sansovino's wax modello of the same subject - executed about 1508 - is also closely comparable (For a discussion of the latter see P. Williamson, European Sculpture at the Vitoria and Albert Museum, London, 1996, pp. 94-95).
