Lot Essay

Two drawings by this Sicilian artist are illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, Palermo, Palazzo Abatellis, Maestri del Disegno nelle collezioni di Palazzo Abatellis, 1995, nos. 50-1. A picture of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, dated 1596 and similar in composition to the present drawing is in Collesano, Sicily (fig. 1). It displays the same decorative frieze at the bottom with two smaller compositions flanked by a central coat-of-arms.
