A SET OF FOUR WILLIAM AND MARY WALNUT SIDE CHAIRS
French-Canadian, late 17th-early 18th century
Each with a shaped tablet crest above ring, baluster and ball-turned spindles flanked by baluster and block-turned stiles headed by ball-turned finials above a trapezoidal over-upholstered seat, on ring, baluster and block-turned legs with bun feet joined by a ring, baluster and ball-turned front stretcher and similar H-stretchers

Lot Essay

A rare survival as a set of four, these chairs are based on Louis XIII prototypes. Closely related examples are in the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto (see Webster, Rococo to Rustique (Toronto, 2000), nos. 79 and 80; see also Palardy, The Early Furniture of French Canada (Toronto, 1965), no. 268).
