Lot Essay

In a private communication to the present owner, Camillo Manzitti has confirmed the attribution of this painting to Valerio Castello, noting that the composition closely follows two other depictions of the same subject by the artist, both of which are in a horizontal format (one, also on a copper support, in the Galleria Pallavicini, Rome; the other a detached fresco originally in the Palazzo Saredo-Parodi, Genoa, and now in a private collection). Manzitti has suggested a dating of circa 1655 for the present painting.
