TENUTA CAPARZO
Caparzo's approach to wine production began with research into the terroir's influence on the qaulity of grapes. This is particularly relevant, as they are located in the Torrenieri area, which possesses a unique microclimate capable of remarkable heights. From this philosophical foundation, estate manager Nuccio Turrone decided to enlist the talents of enologist Vittorio Fiore, and has since consistently produced excellent wines. Realizing the importance of soil, in 1977 they obtained a parcel in La Casa vineyard on the Montosoli hillside, just north of Montalcino, choosing to bottle it on its own as a single-vineyard cru. Caparzo's understanding of the terroir in which they are working is evident in the elegant expressions of soil and vintage represented by the 1980 and 1979 Brunellos. The 1979 is high in alcohol and dry extract as a result of a cold winter and sunny spring and summer, while the 1980 is lower in alcohol, but slightly richer in body. Both wines, though very different, are exceptional examples of both the characteristics of the area and of great Brunello in general.
