The design for Stromberg's amphibious power base, Atlantis was conceived by Ken Adam. The overall effect of Adam's futuristic vision was stunning. In Adam's words ...My Bond designs and all my other ahead-of-modern designs were always very linear; simple but efficient, with a bareness of line. But on Spy I also went into curved shapes. The combination excited me...something just clicked and I knew I'd done it right...

The film's chief villain, Karl Stromberg [Curt Jurgens], a billionaire shipping magnate, lives on Atlantis, his unique amphibious power base, capable of supporting life above or below the surface. As Pfeiffer and Worrall's synopsis of Bond's assignment explains: Stromberg is obsessed with bringing civilization to the depths of the ocean..for megalomaniacal purposes: he dreams of establishing himself as dictator of the new world order. In the film's climax, Bond [Roger Moore] working with top Soviet spy Major Anya Amasova [Barbara Bach] take part .. in a fierce battle with Stromberg's forces and the freed crews from nuclear submarines the villain had captured, and narrrowly avert a nuclear holocaust. Bond kills Stromberg and escapes the exploding Atlantis with Anya.
The model in this lot is thought to be the one that Stromberg shows Bond, [Roger Moore] disguised as marine biologist Richard Stirling, when he visits Stromberg in his world beneath the sea. As they are looking at a scale model of Atlantis, Stromberg tells Bond/Stirling of his vision ...An underwater city...the only hope for the future of mankind....
