Lot Essay

The prototype of circa 1505-1508, on panel, 107 x 86 cm, forms part of the outside of the right wing of the High Altar in the Church of Saint Nicolas, Calcar (see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, IXa, p.51, no.1, plate 3h).
