Based on the date of execution, the traditional identification of the sitters as Johann van Gunning (1580-1635), judge and burgomaster of Sonsbeeck and Anna van Heeshuysen can no longer be sustained. They are more likely to be identified as Ernestus van Gunning - brother of Adelheid Magdalena van Gunning, who married Jaques de Neree in 1637 - and his wife.
