with inscription 'This Portrait by Lely is presumed to be the Father/of Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough whose portrait/by Kneller at Stowe it so much resembles - /upon the old stretcher now in my possession is/written/Mr. Jennings/Mote Phem.../Shaftsbury/Dorset/Frances Blackburn-/1846-' (on an old label on the reverse)
