A German (Klausen) Pavise
Mid-15th Century
Of wood concave towards the back and of characteristic rectangular form with rounded top and raised vertical band hollowed out internally, tapering to a beak-like projection at the top, the front covered with canvas and gesso painted light red with floral scrolls and with a white fess, representing the Austrian Bindenschild, at the top two shields, one on either side, painted respectively with the red cross of St. George on a white ground, and a six-pointed yellow (for gold) star on a green field, the interior covered with pigskin, with an iron bar across the top of the medial channel to take the top of a supporting stake, fragments of the internal leathers secured by iron nails, and an old Franz Thill Collection label
