1939 BROUGH SUPERIOR SS80 WITH ALPINE GRAND SPORTS SIDECAR
Not UK registered
Frame No. M8/2150
Engine No. 4788
Black with matching seat, and sidecar interior trim
Engine: V-twin, 996cc, side-valve, twin magneto; Gearbox: four-speed; Brakes: front and rear drums.
George Brough produced his first Brough Superior in 1919. Its engine was manufactured for Brough by J A Prestwich (JAP) and was a 50° vee-twin with overhead valves, alloy pistons and roller bearings for the mains and big ends. The internal quality of the engine was continued externally in the standard of finish and attention to detail. This emphasis on quality was maintained throughout the frame, petrol tank and ancillaries and so perhap justified George Brough's immodest sobriquet of "Superior".
The quality was thankfully maintained throughout the 1920's in what have become his most renowned products - the SS80 and SS100. Brough made it clear that his sophisticated machines were designed for the solo rider, particularly if he had sporting ambitions. Brough himself publicised the SS80's potential when he won a five lap scratch race at Brooklands in 1922.
This Brough Superior was supplied new to Hooley's Garage of Nottingham, and has been in the present ownership for a number of years. An excellent restored example, it is equipped with Brough's own design the Alpine Grand Sports sidecar with cruiser body. This aristocrat amongst its brethren offered exceptional comfort for the sidecar passenger owing to its use of long elliptic springs for suspension, and underslung sidecar body. Furthermore, it utilised a single frame tube of two inch diameter for its chassis, which as its advertising was apt to point out, in its own right ensured safety as there were no brazed joints in such construction and therefore no danger of breakage. Ever inventive, the single tube could also be used as a spare fuel container, holding approximately 1½ gallons!
It returns to the UK and as such will require import duties to be paid prior to registration.
