Lot Essay

The present picture is one of two surviving fragments from what is considered to be the artist's primary treatment of this subject. The corresponding fragment (62.2 x 43.2 cm.) showing Daifilo was formerly with E. V. Thaw & Co., New York. The composition is known in its entirety throught two other versions: the picture, with studio assistance, in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; and the picture, signed and dated 1623, in a private collection, New York.
