Lot Essay
This elaborate ring, almost Gothic in feel, is very similar to a worn example in the L.A.Mayer Memorial Institute for Islamic Art (Hasson, Rachel: Early Islamic Jewellery, Jerusalem, 1987, no.56, p.49). Another similar is in New York (Jenkins, Marilyn and Keene, Manuel: Islamic Jewelry in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1982, no.31). A further very large example was sold in these Rooms 28 April 1998, lot 311. The shoulders of this ring are very similar to the harpies supporting a pottery lustre dish dated AH 611 (1214 AD) (Bahrami, M.: Gurgan Faiences, Cairo, 1949, pl.LVII).
