A Jean Paul Gaultier stage bra of black satin, the conical-shaped cups decorated with concentric circles and zig zag details in fuchsia pink stitching, embellished with three fuchsia pink satin bows, labelled inside Jean Paul Gaultier, Paris, with additional white cotton label inscribed in an unknown hand in black ink Madonna -- made for Madonna for the Blonde Ambition Tour, 1990 and won by the vendor in a competition run by BBC Radio One in July, 1990; accompanied by a letter on BBC Radio headed stationery; three ticket stubs from the Wembley Stadium concert, Saturday, 21st July, 1990; and a press clipping regarding the competition (6)

Lot Essay

According to the letter that accompanied the prize, this was ...Madonna's very own bustiere, kindly donated by her for 31 Days In May...and did reside in Madonna's wardrobe before she gave it to us... The vendor won the competition by guessing Madonna's date of birth but, according to the accompanying press clipping, the Radio One DJ gave her the prize when she had incorrectly stated the answer as August 16th, 1959 instead of 1958. The radio station, realising their mistake, quickly traced the real winner and were obliged to present him with another Gaultier bra.
Gaultier's iconic creations for Madonna quickly became synonomous with her image, the conical bustière being the most famous of these. In an interview with Sky magazine in 1990, Gaultier called her look femininity with masculinity...a very Madonna mix...the ultimate style clash between the designer with rock star status and the rock star with the supermodel profile...
