The Dun Emer Guild was founded in 1902 by Evelyn Gleeson with the support of the two sisters of the artist Jack Yeats, Lily and Elizabeth Yeats. The Guild was a collective of women artists and artisans, producing carpets, tapestries and other textiles, embossed leather, bookbindings and enamelling work.
From the 1920s onwards the motifs of the Guild's carpets were almost always Celtic in inspiration. The present carpet is likely to have been designed either by Evelyn Gleeson or her niece Katherine MacCormack, who by this period had become the principal designer for the Guild.
