The Windsor Uniform Coatee of HM Louis-Philippe, King of the French 1830-48
A late Georgian or early Victorian double-breasted coatee, in deep blue cloth with scarlet cloth collar and cuffs, fine gilt buttons mounted with the Garter Star within the Garter beneath the Crown, blue cloth lining; together with a short scarlet coat with white cloth collar, cuffs, lapels and cuff-slashes, heavily decorated with loops of gold Austrian-pattern lace, richly-gilt scallop-edged buttons, bearing St. Edward's Crown in centre, a Bugle-horn in gold embroidery on scarlet backing to inside front corner of each skirt

By family descent. These uniforms were purchased in Drouot Richelieu's sale in Paris on Monday 30th October 2000 of Souvenirs historiques provenant de la Succession de Monseigneur le Prince Henri d'Orléans, Comte de Paris

Lot Essay

Prince Henri d'Orléans was the great-great-grandson of Louis-Philippe I (deposed during the Revolution of 1848) and was until his death in 1999 the Orléanist claimant to the French throne. Many items offered in the Drouot Richelieu sale were the property of Louis-Philippe, including the Garter bestowed on him by Queen Victoria in 1844, complete with its citation
