Lot Essay

Josef Eberz was born in Limburg in 1880 and studied in Munich under Franz von Stuck where he decided to settle permanently in 1918. He was a member of the Novembergruppe in Munich. In 1937 when a large number of the modern paintings in the Staatsgalerie Munich were confiscated by the Social Nationalists, Eberz was amongst the artists who suffered. Today paintings by him can be found in the following public collections: Städtische Galerie, Munich, Städtische Galerie, Halle and the Kunsthalle, Hamburg.
