Lot Essay

The inscription is apparently in the same hand as those on pictures from Wentworth Woodhouse, which correspond with the list attached to the will, dated 9 September 1695, of the 2nd Earl of Strafford, no. 54 of which is described as 'My fathers picture at length when he was a young man by Mitten' (see Sir Oliver Millar, For Veronica Wedgewood These Studies in Seventeenth Century History, ed. by R. Ollard and P. Tudor-Craig, London, 1986, p. 122). The recorded attribution to Mytens is understandable, as the list included other whole-lengths by the artist.
