Lot Essay
The principal cause of pink in a diamond is slippage of the crystal lattice. These stones are found mainly in Australia, South Africa and of course the fabled Golconda mines of southern India. They are however found mostly in lighter satuation, often with brownish overtones. Therefore, straight pinks are very rare and those with intense saturations even rarer.
Over the last five years, less than ten pink diamonds of intense saturation were offered at auction. Of these, the largest stone sold was a 7.37 carat fancy intense purplish pink diamond. The 9.77 carat fancy intense purple-pink gem offered here is therefore one of the rarest pink stones to appear at auction in recent years.
