Lot Essay

Llewellyn was principally a painter of portraits and landscapes who painted the state portrait of Queen Mary in 1910, and was President of the Royal Academy between 1928 and 1938. He exhibited widely at Suffolk Street, the New Watercolour Society, the Grosvenor Gallery and the New English Art Club. The present work was no doubt inspired by Charles Kingsley's novel The Water Babies of 1863.
