A RARE CASED FACTORY ENGRAVED .41 NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. VOLCANIC CARBINE, NO. 38, CIRCA 1857
Octagonal barrel with German-silver fore-sight, marked NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14.1854, frame mounted with adjustable rear sight, engraved overall with large open scrolls, varnished walnut stock, butt plate engraved en suite, within a period wood case, the interior lined in red felt, the exterior of lid with unusual marking GONET6RY & BASM8
16½ inch (41.9 cm.) barrel
Light grey-brown patina to barrel, frame and butt plate with aged patina, stock appears to be revarnished, repaired chip at toe, matching numbers throughout including screws, case with much exterior wear
According to Texas Collector: Gaines de Graffenried by Conger, this carbine was found by Gaines de Graffenried in Shiner, Texas. The case was found by Red Jackson and subsequently sold to Gaines de Graffenried.
