The right wing is loosely based on Benson's Deposition of 1528, in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Liège, Inv. no. 252, one of his few signed works (see G. Marlier, Ambrosius Benson, 1957, pp. 93-4 and 291, no. 37, pls. vii-viii).
