Lot Essay

"Some of the earliest visual references to birds in Native American art can be seen on ground and polished birdstones, which appear to have functioned as atlatl appendages ... They were coveted exchange items, sought after and traded throughout the Midwest and Great Lakes between 1500 and 500 B.C.," (Brose, Brown, and Penney 1985, p. 183).
